The museum occupies part of the vast complex of the Basilica di San Lorenzo, former Medici’s parish, who particularly increased its value. Here the family members were buried since the first half of the 15th century.
The museum is famous worldwide for the Sagrestia nuova (New Sacristy) an environment designed by Michelangelo for the tombs of Lorenzo and Giuliano de’ Medici, thus creating one of the architectural masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance sculpture.
The Cappella dei Principi, built from the beginning of the 17th century as a Medici’s mausoleum is part of the museum tour. It is a magnificent octagonal building, covered by a large dome, completely coated with polychrome marble inlays, where the tombs of the Medici Grand Dukes are located.
